The pneumato-enteric recess progressively extends into the dorsal mesogastrium, creating a large irregular space with a narrow opening into the peritoneal cavity. This space is the primordium of the lesser sac (bursa omentalis); the opening into the peritoneal cavity (greater sac) is called the epiploic foramen.
