Hindgut

The transition between the middle third and the left third of the transverse colon is the starting point for the posterior or terminal intestine. The descending colon, the sigmoid colon and the rectum follow on. Part of the urogenital system also develops from the endoderm of the posterior intestine.
The hindgut ends in a blind pouch or cloaca located on the ventral abdominal wall. It is separated from the ectodermal anal depression by the cloacal membrane. The cloaca is also in contact with the allantois and the mesonephric duct.
