Teaching text 7: Blood vessels and circulation 13: Flow through the liver
Only the left umbilical vein remains. One part of it goes through the liver, whilst the other part bypasses the liver via the ductus venosus. The ductus venosus ends directly in the right hepato-cardiac channel, together with the hepatic veins. The umbilical vein is closed after birth to form the ligamentum teres hepatis and the ductus venosus becomes the ligamentum venosum.
