The peritoneal cavity arises from the caudal part of the coelomic ring that opens towards the chorionic cavity (extra-embryonic coelom). The connection to the pleural cavities becomes closed through the formation of the pleuroperitoneal fold and of other components of the diaphragm. The pleuroperitoneal fold develops further into the pleuroperitoneal membrane.
