At S12, the neural tube is completely closed and covered with surface ectoderm. This means that the entire embryonic body becomes covered with surface ectoderm. The fold at the border between surface ectoderm and amnion now forms a ring (umbilical ring) on the ventral side of the embryo. In this way, the abdominal wall becomes closed, except at the umbilical ring.
