Teaching text  19: Cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis  5: Meiosis

Meiosis

Meiosis produces gametes (oocytes, spermatozoa). The gametes have a haploid chromosome set (23,X or 23,Y), which is formed by two consecutive cell divisions during meiosis. During meiosis I, maternal and paternal chromosomes are distributed equally to two haploid daughter cells. During meiosis II, which is similar to mitosis, the sister chromatids of the chromosomes (1n 2C) separate from each other (1n 1C).
