Teaching text  19: Cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis  4: Cytokinesis

5. Telophase. The separated sister chromatids have reached the centrosome region. The kinetochore microtubules disappear. The polar microtubules grow longer. A nuclear membrane forms around each group of sister chromatids. The nucleoli become visible again.

6. Cytokinesis. In the middle of the cell and perpendicular to the mitotic spindle, a circular actine-myosine bundle arises that forms a contractile ring. This ring contracts and tightens the plasma membrane. This forms a furrow which deepens until it meets the remainder of the mitotic spindle between the two nuclei. This thin bridge (midbody) can be maintained for a certain amount of time before finally breaking down. The two daughter cells are now separated.
