Teaching text  16: Development of the limbs  5: Development of the leg

The development of the lower limb occurs later than that of the arm. An adduction due to growth occurs in the leg, as in the arm. At S16, the big toe is first to develop in the foot plate, in a cranial direction. The leg develops into upper and lower parts. The articulation of the knee forms at the bend between the two parts. Unlike the hand, the foot first undergoes a supination. Interdigital necrosis also occurs between the toes.
