Teaching text  14: Face  6: Facial processes (S18, S23)

A furrow (nasolacrimal groove) extending up to the eye arises between the lateral nasal process and the maxillary process (animation: facial development stage 17-18).

At S13, the left and right sides of the mandibular process surround the oral depression and the pharynx on the ventral side and fuse together. This gives rise to the lower lip. The primary oral cavity opens to the outside through the oral cleft and lies just above the lower lip. By S11, the oropharyngeal membrane has already disintegrated. There is now direct contact between the amniotic cavity, the oral cavity and the pharynx (animation: facial development stage 18 to 23, stage 12 to 23).
