Teaching text  11: Genital system  7: Cell clones

During the cell divisions of the spermatogonia, the cells remain attached to each other through cytoplasmic bridges and form clones. The exchange of ions and molecules between the cells causes each cohort of cells to mature synchronously. During the development of A1 spermatogonia into spermatids, the cells progressively move away from the basal lamina towards the lumen of the seminiferous tubule.
The term spermatogenesis includes the whole development from spermatogonia into sperm cells, whereas spermiogenesis involves only the maturation of spermatids to sperm cells.
