Development in males
The paramesonephric duct degenerates under the influence of both: androgens from the Leydig interstitial cells and the Anti-Müller hormone (AMH) from the Sertoli cells. Its remnants are the appendix of testis and the prostatic utricle.
The mesonephric duct and a part of the mesonephric tubules differentiate further. The proximal part of the mesonephric duct increases in length and becomes convoluted (duct of epididymis). The distal part becomes the ductus deferens. About 5 to 12 mesonephric tubules are preserved and form the efferent ductules in the head of the epididymis. The connection between the seminiferous tubules and the efferent ductules is established by the rete testis. The ejaculatory duct arises from the distal part of the mesonephric duct that terminates in the prostatic part of the urethra.
