Human Embryology and Teratology

Introduction  5: Structure of the program

Structure of the program

The program has three domains: the teaching text, the multiple-choice questions, and the atlas. You can start with any domain and at any arbitrary place within your chosen domain. From there, you can jump to other places within that domain or to other domains.
The teaching text introduces you to human embryology. The text is supplemented by many schematic diagrams and some animations. Hyperlinks are embedded within the text from which you can jump directly to the corresponding image in the atlas to study the structures again. You can also use the hyperlinks to jump to other sections of the text. The aim of the teaching text is to supplement, rather than replace, more specialized literature.
The multiple choice questions are designed to help you with assessing how well you have understood and learnt the developmental processes. They are grouped according to chapters.
The atlas shows the developmental stages in the form of 3D reconstructions. In the atlas, it is possible to click on the images that you want to explore. The images feature sensitive fields so that individual structures within the image light up when you move your mouse over them. Alternatively, you can start from a list of the names of structures within each image. Click on whichever structure you wish to see in more detail and it lights up straight away.
You can study the atlas in two different ways. In information mode, the known structures are indicated and named. In test mode, you can test your knowledge of individual structures. As an option you can also select the learning mode, where only a selection of structures is emphasized.
In addition to the three domains, the program has an Index. This contains names and terms that occur in the atlas and teaching text. As embryological nomenclature is not yet unified, some synonyms are given in the Index.
We hope that you enjoy the program. We would be grateful for any suggestions for improvement.
