Human Embryology and Teratology

Introduction  4: Body sizes

The greatest length (GL) is a measurement of the body, excluding the limbs. In early embryonic stages, it differs from the crown-rump length (CRL), which is the distance from the crown of the head (above the mesencephalon) to the rump. To obtain the crown-heel length (CHL) the CRL is added to the distance from the hip to the knee and from the knee to the heel. Average values at birth are 3350 grams for the birth weight, 335 mm for the GL, and 500 mm for the CHL.
